The Waccamaw Sports Classic first began in 2008. Members from multiple agencies spreading all over; Georgetown, Williamsburg, and Horry Counties. Even though they each had different back grounds their belief and mission was the same. That was to develop a program for seniors ages 50+ and in some cases even 100+.
In the early fall of 2007 members for multiple agencies met to begin planning and organizing the Waccamaw Sports Classic. These individuals volunteered their own time for planning and still do to this day. The group was very successful and put on the first Waccamaw Sports Classic in the Spring of 2008. The games were a huge hit and had 200+ seniors participating in the event.
The Waccamaw Sports Classic began utilizing recreational facilities throughout the region. It wasn’t until the year 2012 that the Waccamaw Sports Classic was hosted at the beautiful Coastal Carolina University. In 2017 the Waccamaw Sports Classic has moved to Waccamaw High School. This has offered a new opportunity for bringing in new volunteers and potentially new activities.
The Waccamaw Sports Classic is a locally sanctioned event by the South Carolina Senior Games. After the completion of our 2016 games the Waccamaw Sports Classic received the award for the; 2016 Innovation Award from the National Association of Development Organizations.
The Waccamaw Sports Classic exist today to serve men and women ages 50 and up. Our mission is to promote healthier living.
The Waccamaw Sports Classic has for this coming 2017 games; 15 sports & arts/crafts events, totaling up to 16 different events to choose from. Each event will have sub categories which will offer more for you to choose from.
The Waccamaw Sports Classic is an annual event that continues to grow and expand year to year.
